Therapy for Expats

When home is more than one place.

Living abroad can open up an entirely new life, but it can also bring challenges that are difficult to explain to people who haven't experienced them.

Questions around identity and belonging, loneliness, relationships, cultural differences, or simply trying to build a sense of home somewhere new can all become part of the experience.

Therapy offers a space to explore these parts of your life with someone who understands what it means to live between cultures.

Living between cultures

Moving abroad is about much more than changing where you live.

It can change how you see yourself, where you feel you belong, how you relate to family and friends back home, and even which version of yourself feels most familiar.

Sometimes those changes feel exciting. Sometimes they're lonely or disorienting. Often, they're both.

I grew up between Germany, Syria, and Lebanon before settling in the Netherlands. Moving between cultures, languages, and different ideas of “home” has shaped my own life as well as the way I work as a psychologist.

I won't assume that my experience is the same as yours. But I do understand that living between cultures can add layers to experiences that might otherwise seem straightforward.

A personal note

Expat therapy isn't a separate type of therapy. It's individual therapy that makes room for the cultural and personal context of your experiences.

I draw from CBT, Schema Therapy, and Mindfulness, while taking into account the different relationships, cultures, expectations, and experiences that have shaped you.
